Two-Page Article

For my two page article, I wrote on the Sarasota High School basketball team. I choose this article because I have a strong interest in high school sports and basketball was in season making it easy to obtain pictures and interviews.

Magazine Cover

For my magazine cover I featured one of the seniors I interviewed, Jack Duffy. I decided to have his photograph cover the length of the magazine cover with only his body colored in to advertise the article Everything Matters: The Comeback Season. I also liked how the photograph covered the length of the magazine because it allowed for me to put titles of other articles around the edge.

Flatplan

My flatplan includes 100 pages with about 52% of them being ads. The articles that are in the flatplan are devised for a younger clientle such as high school athletes. For this reason, my flatplan includes articles that appeal to a younger generation such as high school sports news, Gatorade debates, and up and coming reports on athletes. The ad pages of my magazine would ads selling sports gear, promoting sporting events, and featuring new sporting technologies.

Photos Used

All of the photographs I have chosen to use have come from my camera roll of pictures I have previously taken or were taken at the basketball practice/game I attended. All of the photographs used are my own. I have also obtained consent from each photographed individual to use their photo.

Interview Questions/Responses

On Wednesday, December 12th, I interviewed two senior players on the Sarasota High basketball team as well as the Head Coach. Jack Duffy, Alex Molyneaux, and Mike Fields.

Coach Fields when interviewed expressed the importance of the team working to get better every game, working as a whole, and simply the concept of everything matters.

Jack Duffy when interviewed mentioned how the team is young but has a lot of potential and how he hopes to end the season with a winning record.

Alex Molyneaux when interviewed expressed how the team needs to simply work together for each and every point if they want to come out on top.

The one thing both Jack and Alex, and Head Coach Mike Fields all stated was that without drive and ambition to be the best they wont.

Pre-Data/Material Collection

Today I will be attending Sarasota High School's Boys Basketball Team practice to do interviews and take photographs of the players at practice that can be used in my magazine. I will interview two players and the head coach to get word on their goals for this season and motivations behind each game. I will then attend the game on Wednesday, December 12th to take more photographs.

Magazine Project Genre Research #5

The fifth magazine I have chosen to analyze is Today's Golfers magazine featuring Dustin Johnson. Unlike the other four articles I have analyzed this one is my least favorite. Today's Golfers magazine is very clustered with lots of big fonts and words that look clumped together. While there is a lot of information on other stories featured in the magazine, they are all clumped together making the cover look messy and unprofessional. Today's Golfers magazine has a total circulation of about 50,000 and has not been recently named to any awards.

Magazine Project Genre Research #4

The fourth sports magazine I have chosen to analyze is the USA Today Sports Weekly edition of Collge Football. The cover features one of Alabama's quarterbacks with the subtitle "Two QB's give Tide one tantalizing choice". The cover photo is of one Alabama's quarterbacks running the ball downfield. USA Today's logo is a red filled-in circle with "USA Today" written to the right of it. The layout of this magazine allows for the titles of other stories in the magazine to be featured on the cover page. The article contains about 65% adds and the stories are focused at a broad audience with variations among sports. All together USA Today has a circulation of about 2.47 million and has won several awards including the 2017 Red Smith Award.

Magazine Project Genre Research #3

The third sports magazine I have chosen to analyze is the ESPN edition of Mike Trout with the headline "Magic Mike". Mike Trout's headshot of him in his Angels uniform spans the length of the whole page. The article on Trout is titled "The Age Issue" addressing how young he is and discussing if he could get better with age. Unlike the Sports Illustrated covers, ESPN is not pushed behind Mike Trout and rather overlays the top of his headshot. Other subtitles such as the sport-by-sport career expectancy, the $60 million high school football stadium, and the peak age for every position in every sport are featured. The article contains mostly action shots with long paragraphs aimed at sports analytics and middle-aged sports fans. ESPN has a circulation of about 2.14 million and won Magazine of the year in 2018 at the Eddie & Ozzie Awards Gala.

Magazine Project Genre Research #2

The second sports magazine I have chosen to analyze is the Sports Illustrated Kids edition Tom Brady feature. The cover has Tom Brady surrounded by five goats while his pointing with an enthusiastic facial expression. Above the Sports Illustrated title is the caption "FOOTBALL BLOWOUT" and below Tom Brady and the goats is the caption "IS TOM BRADY THE G.O.A.T.?". Unlike other articles, Sports Illustrated publishes, the kid's edition does not have subtitles of other stories that can be found within the article. Within the article, the stories contain mostly photos and big font to attract the targeted audience: young athletes/kids. Sports Illustrated Kids was first published in 1989 and has about 950,000 in circulation. Sports Illustrated Kids has won the "Parents' Choice Magazine Award" seven times and the "Distinguished Achievement for Excellence in Educational Publishing" eleven times.

Magazine Project Genre Research #1

Image result for sports illustrated julio jonesThe first sports magazine I have chosen to analyze is the Sports Illustrated Julio Jones feature. The cover page is a smokey black color with the title in black and the sub-title in white. To match the black color scheme Julio Jones is wearing an all black cape. Julio Jones' photo is the focus of the magazine cover, vertically stretched to cover the whole page. Other articles featured on the front page are of other professional athletes or football-related articles. These articles tend to be about twenty pages apart with adds or other short-stories in between them. At the bottom left corner, an add for Sports Illustrated TV is featured to promote readers to subscribe to their TV channel as well. Sports Illustrated has approximately 3 million distributions and has been recently nominated for both the GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Magazine Overall Coverage and the Sports Emmy Award for Outstanding Digital Innovation.

Project Selection: Final- Magazine

For my project selection, I have decided to do a magazine. I decided to do a magazine for many reasons including: the ability to work by myself, the flexibility of the project, and the opportunity to create my own sports magazine that suits my interest. Being able to work by myself for the magazine project is ideal for it allows me to create it to my magazine as I envision. My magazine will be sports-themed and feature the top high school athletes at Sarasota High School. My time-management skills, strong interest in sports, interviewing skills, and organizational skills will all be key in the successful completion of my project.

Project Selection: Film

Producing a film can be both a very daunting and exciting experience. As seen in the behind the scenes of the film Ferris Bueller's Day Off, John Hughes was on a roller coaster of emotions trying to meet deadlines, stay within budget, cut film, and work efficiently with his cast. The fact that you can make a movie showcasing "the perfect day" is just an example of the endless opportunities in the film industry. A very important part of making a film is meeting deadlines. One of my best traits is my ability to time manage efficiently. I also am very organized which is another essential to making a film. On the other hand, I lack creativity and "vision" which would make the film process very difficult for me.

Project Selection: Magazine

Magazines are essential for long car rides and flights to entertain and inform one of today's political news, celebrity gossip, top tourism destinations, and current global issues. Normally my preferences range from fashion magazines to political magazines. However, I tend to be most interested in travel and sports magazines. I have competed in both competitive and recreational sports since the age of four ranging from golf to softball. My immense amount of knowledge in multiple sports would allow me to provide great insight if I were to do a sports magazine. If I were to make a sports article I would cover the local high school sports teams. I will work alone to create a top-notch sports magazine.
